About Split

(Historic nucleus with Diocletian's Palace entered on UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979)

With an average of 7 hours of sunshine per day throughout the year (12 hours in July), the city of Split is one of the sunniest cities in Europe. By its lush Mediterranean and subtropic vegetation (palms, agaves, cactuses) it has since time immemorial attracted people from all over the world.
Around A.D. 300 Emperor Diocletian built his palace in Split that, after his death became the shelter to many exiled Roman emperors and their families. Throughout its history Split was attacked and conquered by many who left their traces in the culture and architecture of the city. At the beginning of the 20th century Split became the most important Dalmatian port, growing into the economic, administrative and cultural center of Dalmatia.
Its rich historical heritage may be admired in its numerous museums: Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments, Archaeological Museum (founded in 1820 and being one of the oldest museums in Croatia); Cathedral Treasury (liturgical objects), Ethnographical Museum, Historical and Maritime Museum, Gallery of Fine Arts and the Collection of the Franciscan Monastery at Poljud.
Among its numerous points of interest that one must visit are Diocletian's Palace, ancient Salona and the Me?troviŠ Gallery. Those fond of walking can go for a stroll on Marjan Hill, a popular weekend resort of all citizens of Split with a unique scenic view of the city, its port and surroundings.
The city with a 1700 year-old tradition is also known for the entertainment it offers, particularly in the summer when its squares, streets and other outdoor areas are the sites of various events that make this city a large open-air stage. From mid-July until mid-August Split hosts its traditional Split Summer Festival (drama, opera and concerts), Saturday Nights in Split (classical music) and festivals of pop-music (Art-Summer, folklore performances, folk feasts ...)
Traditional festivities are: Feast of the Holy Cross, Flower Fair, Wine Fair, Feast of St. Domnius, patron saint of the city (May 7) also celebrated as the Feast of the City of Split.
The city offers facilities for nearly all sports; trim-tracks, swimming pools, beaches in the city and its surroundings.
